About Physical Therapists* and

What they can do for You

*State of Florida

bullet

PTs provide fitness consultations and rehabilitation of illness or injuries.

bullet

Master or Doctoral degree: all PTs now graduate with minimum of a Master's degree, some graduate with a Doctoral degree.

bullet

PTs must be licensed in the state- Check with the state professional boards to see if there are any ethical issues or reprimand.

bullet

Direct access: patients can see PTs directly without a doctor’s referral*

bullet

Shop around: just like choosing a physician, before choosing a PT:

check how many years and what kind of experience

Ask about the PT’s treatment philosophy: some will tend to use more modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, others tend to be more manual- soft tissue or joint mobilizations, others emphasize more exercise.

As a rule, it should be a combination of the above and you should progress to more exercise once you are out of the acute period of rehab.

bullet

Your insurance may limit your choices of PT clinics, but always ask around first.  It makes a difference whom you see, and it gives you a lasting impression.

bullet

Once insurance no longer covers for treatment, you might still require more treatment for long term benefit.  Take this into consideration and be willing to pay privately to take better care of your health.  Insurance only covers the bare minimum.

bullet

Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA) must work under the supervision of the PT. They receive training from accredited PTA school, which is usually offered at community colleges.

* In Florida, if you have a diagnosis already, you can see a PT directly for as long as you need.  If no physician diagnosis, you can first see the PT for 21 days and return to the doctor for follow up afterwards if needed.  Medicare patients will need a doctor’s referral before starting a physical therapy regimen (doctors include medical, osteopathic, chiropractic, dental, and podiatry).
